abstract
An analytical method is developed for determining estimates of daily soil moisture levels in the upper horizons of the soil profile. The method accounts for the movement of moisture into and out of the upper horizons, and for the moisture stored within the profile. The method is characterized by a description of the manner of storage of moisture, and the wetting and drying phases. The method has been verified by estimating the parameters for soil profiles in two natural, agricultural watersheds using an iterative optimization algorithm. The objective function for optimization is based on the sum of squares of deviations between observed and computed daily soil moisture values.
