abstract
The authors outline a hybrid method that seeks to combine the efficiency of a quasi-Newton method capable of locating stable and unstable equilibrium configurations with a robust homotopy method that is capable of tracking equilibrium paths with turning points while exploiting sparsity of the Jacobians. As another alternative to the above hybrid method the authors evaluate the effectiveness of the quasi-Newton method when used in conjunction with a deflation technique to locate multiple equilibrium solutions. In its limited applications the method shows a great deal of promise although additional work is definitely warranted to make the latter technique robust.
