We construct wavelet bases that are generated by the dynamics of the classical wave equation rather than by translation. Such a basis is a tight frame and has an infinite number of mother wavelets indexed by spherical harmonics. The wavelets are Huygen wavelets in the sense that they are supported away from the origin by a distance determined by the time-translations generating them. Finally, they have a polynomial decay at infinity of degree comparable to their degree of smoothness. 1995 Academic Press, Inc.
