  • 2016, Indian Pharmaceutical Association. All rights reserved. Cannabinoids are known since ancient times as powerful phytopharmaceutical agents with strong medicinal properties. The two chief cannabinoids are -9-tetrahyrdrocannabinol (THC), the major psychoactive component of marijuana, and cannabidiol (CBD), the major non-psychoactive component of marijuana. They are prohibited compounds and not currently available for therapeutic use. Recently, there are claims of clinical efficacy of CBD-predominant products or medical marijuana for epilepsy, chronic pain and related conditions. However, the mechanisms underlying the antiepileptic efficacy of cannabis remain unclear. In America, four states have legalized the recreational use of marijuana. This is opening new gates for the resurgence of cannabinoid phyto pharmaceutical industry in the United States. This article briefly outlines the emerging potential of CBD and related phyto pharmaceuticals as therapeutic agents.
