A discussion covers advances towards the integration of process design, process control, and process operability in separation and reaction/separation systems; a simultaneous strategy featuring high fidelity dynamic models, explicit consideration of structural process, and control design aspects; and application to two typical systems, i.e., distillation system (benzene-toluene), and reactive distillation system (production of ethyl acetate). These topics were discussed in a presentation at the 6th AIChE International Conference on Chemical Process Control (Tucson, AZ 1/7-12/2001).
