In this work a number of improvements in the mathematical formulation of the back-off idea for the selection of regulatory control structures are presented. The new formulation is shown to be an improved linear approximation of the exact nonlinear formulation and it is believed that this improved formulation will allow consideration of large scale case studies including plantwide control problems. 2011 Elsevier B.V.
