A number of materials used as a media for molecular media devices have been studied. Their synthesis, properties, including ultrafast kinetics, absorption spectra of ground and intermediate states have been measured and the fluorescence and photoreaction quantum yields determined. A new molecular system is described which is capable, for the first time, of high-density 2D and 3D rewritable storage and non-destructive readout. The relevant properties and utilization of this unique molecular system in 2D and 3D computer storage are described.
