abstract
Photoexcitation within the charge transfer (CT) absorption bands of the electron donor-acceptor or EDA complexes of various anthracene donors (D) with tetracyanoethylene or tetranitromethane acceptors (A) has revealed the presence of unusual ternary (2:1) species of the general form [(D,D),A]. The latter manifest themselves in the time-resolved absorption spectra as anthracene -dimer radical cations (D,D)+. Bichromophoric interactions in anthracene -dimers are modeled with [2.2](9,10)-anthracenophane which affords a persistent radical cation and an isolable EDA complex with tetracyanoethylene. The molecular structure of this complex is established by X-ray crystallography. 1985 American Chemical Society.
