abstract
Pulse-position modulation (PPM) has long been considered by NASA for some deep-space and intersatellite communication applications. As the demand for increased throughput increases, however, it has become apparent that PPM is rather inefficient, and that alternative modulation schemes should be investigated. In this paper we investigate the throughput and error-probability performances of various modulation schemes, including PPM, overlapping PPM (OPPM), multi-pulse PPM (MPPM) and on-off keying (OOK).
