abstract
Studies were conducted to determine the breakeven price of high-energy sorghum compared to competing crops in the Lower Rio Grande Valley (LRGV) and Brazos Valley (BV) areas, Texas, USA. Variability in annual mean per hectare yields of the six selected energy sorghym cultivars suggested that production of energy sorghum is associated with a smaller degree of production risk in the BV than in the LRGV. Energy sorghum's estimated breakeven prices compared to other alternative crops were found to range from US$6.78 to US$17.10 Mg-1 in the LRGV and US$10.60 to US$14.98 Mg-1 in the BV. Total cost to produce methane from energy sorghum ranged from US$6.23 to US$8.45 GJ-1. This is considerably greater than the current market price of natural gas, US$3.32 GJ-1. 1989.
