abstract
In this paper a second order sliding mode observer is proposed for state estimation in a switched reluctance machine (SRM). The estimated rotor position obtained from the observer is used for the electronic commutation of the machine phases. The proposed sliding mode observer provides a robust method of indirect rotor position sensing using terminal measurements of phase voltage and currents. The paper includes detailed simulations of a closed loop controller based on the proposed sliding mode observer.
