Failure Initiation Prediction in Textile Composites Under Complex Thermo-Mechanical Loading Based on Meso-scale Analysis

An approach is developed to characterize the failure initiation behavior of a textile composite through the use of meso-scale analysis. Failure initiation is determined for various combinations of stress components and thermal loads using a meso-scale model. An approach is then developed that utilizes the results of these analyses to quickly determine whether failure occurs for an arbitrary loading state corresponding to a volume average stress acting on the textile unit-cell. The inclusion of thermal loads and resulting residual stresses leads to additional complexities with regards to the application of failure criteria to the meso-scale constituents. These complexities are explored along with an investigation into the effect that thermal loads have on the strength of the textile composite. Finally, characteristic failure initiation behaviors are examined, and it is observed that there are a very few characteristic behaviors which exist relative to the total number of sample loading cases examined. 2012 AIAA.
