abstract
This paper considers an inverse problem for a first-order equation; the determination of the coefficient (a) in t + a + = 0. A particular application is the recovery of a death rate of an age-structured population model. In addition to the usual birth renewal process, census data on the population (namely, the values of (a,t) are two different times) is prescribed. Conditions on the data are given that lead to a unique solution and algorithms for the reconstruction of the coefficient are developed.
