abstract
Some of the significant issues related with forward error correction (FEC), which are required scalable image coders, are discussed. The emphasis is laid on unequal error protection in various channel models, along with the latest developments made in systems design and efficient source-channel bit allocation techniques. It was found that performance of these systems improved due to the use of more powerful channel codes in the channel models. The basic task of FEC is to minimize the average distortion of signals in channels, by allocating available power, subcarriers, and bandwidth among users at the physical layer and source-channel symbols at the application layer, subject to a total resource constraint.
