Enhanced daylighting for deep-plan office buildings Conference Paper uri icon

abstract

  • This paper presents the preliminary findings of the daylighting performance of an optical light pipe system placed in the ceiling plenum of a deep plan office space (10m × 6m × 3m). The south-facing light pipe system can efficiently deliver daylight at the back of the space; between 5m to 10m from window plane for locations between latitudes 24-66°N-S under clear sky conditions. Two identical large scale models (1:4) were used to assess the daylight performance of the light pipe over long-term periods. Results showed that the light pipe can introduce adequate light levels for visual tasks in office environments in climates with predominantly clear sky conditions. Light levels of 300-1,500 lux can be achieved at the back of the space (24 ft from window wall) for solar azimuths 60° East and West of true South (Northern Hemisphere) or true North (Southern Hemisphere) under clear sky conditions.
