abstract
Lignocellulosic biomass, e.g., poplar wood, provides a unique and sustainable resource for environmentally safe organic fuels and chemicals. The effect of different conditions of long-term lime pretreatment on the digestibility of poplar wood was studied. Yields strongly depended on the lignin content of the raw material. Among all tested conditions of long-term lime pretreatment, it is best to retreat poplar wood at 65C with air and for 4 wk, because the material pretreated this way showed the highest overall yield. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the 2006 AIChE Annual Meeting (San Francisco, CA 11/12-17/2006).
