abstract
Researchers at Texas A&M University have been developing processes based on fermentation to produce chemicals from biomass for several years. It involves carrying out the fermentation with ammonium carbonate or ammonium bicarbonate buffer to produce a fermentation broth containing ammonium carboxylate salts of the acids produced by the process. The ammonium carboxylate salts can be reacted with high-molecular weight compounds that have low miscibility with water in order to remove them from the broth.
