Formal Collaborative Production Environment Conference Paper

abstract

• This paper provides a technological infrastructure for asynchronous co-editing of documents. The novelty of our work is that we provide a small set of application program interfaces (APIs) that allow any application to become "collaboration aware" - to become a collaborative tool within our environment. Our environment handles all the coordination, communication and collaborative functions, leaving applications to do what they do best. Our technology also allows multiple simultaneous accesses to a particular document using a scoping scheme. We permit users to collaborate both cooperatively and competitively using the inherent safeguards in parliamentary procedure to handle conflicts. Our technology permits collaborators to discuss matters both synchronously and asynchronously, and provides the data management infrastructure.
