TRAPPING OF IONS INJECTED FROM AN EXTERNAL SOURCE INTO A 3-DIMENSIONAL QUADRUPOLE TRAP Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • The use of quadrupole ion trap to catch ions in flight was investigated numerically. After briefly discussing the principles of ion storage, the number of ions stored in equilibrium and the storage time are presented for different injection conditions. The results of the study show that ion storage for a certain period of time is possible for ions injected into a quadrupole ion trap operated in the radio-frequency mode and also for a trap operated in the combined mode. However, a quadrupole ion trap operated in the Penning mode is not suitable for trapping externally generated ions without an additional decelerating field gradient. 1981.
