Precursors in the optical excitation of giant surface acoustic wave pulses in solids

The propagation of surface perturbations due to the excitation of high-amplitude surface acoustic waves (SAW) and sound bulk waves was investigated. The higher velocity of bulk wave surface perturbations resulted in their arrival before SAW perturbations, thus becoming main contributor to the observed signal. The influence of liquid layer resulting in high differences between the observed and calculated precursor amplitudes, for the fused silica and stainless steel, was also analyzed.
