abstract
A study was performed on the laser generated nonlinear surface acoustic wave (SAW) pulses. The characteristic properties of high amplitude SAW on free surface of solid were different from the bulk waves. The SAW pulses were measured in polycrystalline stainless steel and pulse compression depends on positive parameters of the local nonlinearity.
