abstract
A combined electromagnetic and thermal analysis of microwave batch sterilization of water is presented, based on a one-dimensional model, both with respect to the electromagnetic wave propagation and the heat transfer. The model incorporates impedance-matching tuners, which are continuously optimized to maximize the power delivered to the water sample, whose parameters change with temperature. Numerical results are included, showing typical transient temperature profiles and dissipated power distributions in water for one-sided and two-sided excitations.
