LES calibration of a turbulent potential model for turbomachinery flows Conference Paper uri icon

abstract

  • Perot's turbulent potential model 1 introduces a Helmholtz representation of the divergence of the Reynolds stress tensor into a scalar and a vector potential. Transport equations for the potentials are solved in order to compute Reynolds stresses. The model constants for these transport equations had previously been determined by analogy to other turbulence models and considerations of certain simplified turbulent flows. The applicability of these constants to the complex turbulent flows encountered in turbomachinery is undetermined. In this work a large eddy simulation (LES) of a complex flow is used in order to provide a calibration procedure for the model constants. The resulting, calibrated model constants may then be used in parametric analyses of the turbomachinery component of interest. For such parametric analyses it would be prohibitively expensive to use LES. The model constants are updated using a least-squares procedure. Results are presented for a mixing chamber. Tentative computations for a stationary turbine blade row are also presented.
