Agriculture based energy for rural household income and well-being: East African experience Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • 2015 Elsevier Ltd. This paper discusses biogas production in East Africa and the implications to household income and sustainable development. A household model that links livestock, biogas and crop production is analyzed. A base model was compared with three scenarios with an increase in crop yield from the use of bioslurry. The results demonstrated that investing in biogas plants only for energy replacement would not give farmers positive benefits at the current interest rates. The combined effects of lower interest and increases in yield could encourage farmers' investments in biogas plants that could lead to increases in household income and food security and reduction in deforestation in the region.
