abstract
The H53 helicopter external fuel tanks have a complex wall structure with a thin aluminum liner on the inside. Measurement of the liner thickness is of great technical importance. It is shown that the four layer tank wall may be modeled as an elastic layer (aluminum) on a viscoelastic substrate (fiberglass/epoxy composite). Using conventional ultrasonics, a technique for the measurement of the liner thickness is presented.
