abstract
Transmission of a longitudinal elastic wave through periodic particulate composites, consisting of heavy spherical inclusions in a tetragonal arrangement in an elastic matrix, was measured experimentally. Several band gaps were identified, each having an associated jump in the phase velocity spectrum, near two sets of frequencies: frequencies at which the rigid body (dipole) resonance of particles are enhanced through shear wave interaction within a layer; and frequencies determined by the inter-layer spacing. An approximate theory is developed which shows good correlation with experimental results. 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
