abstract
We study the cavity quantum electrodynamics effects (modified decay rates and energy-level shifts) of an atom near dielectric materials by using the linear response formalism. First, we deal with the case of an atom between parallel dielectric plates and then we focus on the case near cylindrical surfaces. We solve the scattering problem of an oscillating dipole for both geometries for applying the linear response formalism. In some limiting cases (short- and long-range limits) ,we obtain analytical expressions for the level shifts.
