abstract
The dynamics of an atomic wave packet in a single-mode, standing-wave cavity field was studied. It was shown that, since the atom-field coupling strength is determined by the overlap integral of the atomic wave packet and the field mode function, the effect of the wave-packet spreading via the momentum exchange process has a significant effect on the detection efficiency. The physical origin of the matter wave-packet splitting on a node of a quantum field was explained from the viewpoint of the dressed-state picture.
