abstract
This paper introduces a new concept of a modular digital simulator design for testing protective relays. A brief discussion of the relay testing requirements leads to the need for the modular design. The basic features of the modular design are outlined. Several digital simulator implementation approaches are presented and their characteristics described. The benefits of such a modular design concept are summarized at the end.
