TROUBLE SHOOTING MAINTENANCE OF PROTECTION RELAYS USING DIGITAL SIMULATORS Conference Paper uri icon

abstract

  • Identifying the cause of a malfunction of protective relays or relaying schemes may not be a simple task due to the variety and complexity of possible reasons for a malfunction. Self-checking features of a relay are introduced to automatically detect failure of a relay component. They may be quite useful for the trouble shooting of the relay malfunctions caused by a component failure. However, other causes for a malfunction can not be detected using this method. The approach proposed in this paper is based on utilization of the most advanced digital simulator tools recently made available for utility use. The paper discusses both the tools and the methodologies that can lead to new practices for trouble shooting maintenance. This approach would enable the trouble shooting process to become a part of the utility maintenance practice. This in turn would assure that utility personnel would be able to detect and diagnose the relay malfunctions in an efficient and reliable way.
