2015 Elsevier Limited. All rights reserved. Aseptic packaging is a growing trend in the food industry. Since the packaging has to be sterilized before it comes into contact with the foods, heat and chemical sterilants such as hydrogen peroxide are currently routinely employed. However, the use of low energy electron beam (eBeam) in-line sterilization of packaging materials is rapidly growing in the food industry. Using eBeam for in-line sterilization of packaging materials will result in energy conservation, reduction in carbon dioxide footprint, reduction in chemical (hydrogen peroxide) usage and overall cost savings.
