Synthesis of water integration networks in eco-industrial parks Book uri icon

abstract

  • This paper presents a mathematical programming formulation for the water integration in eco-industrial parks considering streams with several pollutants. The mathematical formulation is based on a superstructure that allows the wastewater reuse in the same plant, the water exchange with different plants in addition to a shared set of potential treatment units to determine the network that satisfies the process equipment constraints and environmental regulations for the pollutants discharged to the environment. The model formulation consists in determining the network with the minimum total annual costs considering the costs for the fresh waters, for the piping and the required treatment units. A new discretization approach is also proposed to handle adequately the large set of bilinear terms that appear in the model to yield a near global optimal solution. The results obtained show considerable savings with respect to traditional solution of the individual integration of each plant. 2011 Elsevier B.V.
