2016 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. The chapter will present key concepts, tools, and applications in the area of sustainable design through process integration. Focus is given to holistic process design approaches that emphasize the unity of the process, especially in the areas of conservation of natural resources, reduction of negative environmental impact, and enhancement of process yield and productivity. First, mass, energy, and property integration are described as the three primary categories of process integration. Next, a brief discussion is offered on the various and multiscale applications of sustainable design through process integration.
