Observation of the (η5-C5H5)Mn(CO)2(toluene) Complex by Low-Temperature IR Spectroscopy and Determination of the Manganese−Toluene Bond Strength

The (η5-C5H5)Mn(CO)2(toluene) complex formed upon UV photolysis of (η5-C5H5)Mn(CO)3 in heptane solution in the presence of toluene was detected using low-temperature IR spectroscopy. The toluene molecule is most likely bound to the Mn center in an η2 fashion. The displacement of the toluene ligand by tetrahydrofuran has been studied, and the reaction is found to proceed through a dissociative pathway. Activation analysis yields a value of 14.2±0.8 kcal/mol for the CpMn(CO)2-toluene bond energy.
