MOMENTUM-TRANSFER BETWEEN HE-3 FILMS AND RIPPLONS ON HE-4 SURFACES Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • The problem of momentum transfer between He3 films and ripplons on He4 surfaces is treated both phenomenologically and microscopically. The phenomenology suggests that one should be able to observe surface sound on clean He4 surfaces at low temperatures T, for frequencies exceeding 106 Hz. The microscopic calculations yield the He3-ripplon momentum-transfer rate t3R-1 for both high and low He3 densities, in terms of a microscopic coupling constant D. Comparison with the thermal-conductance data of Mantz, Edwards, and Nayak leads to | D | 0.1 K, with (t3R-1)theoryT4.5, whereas (t3R-1)exptT3.67. 1984 The American Physical Society.
