abstract
We examine the relation between the algebra of area-preserving diffeomorphisms of a two-dimensional surface and the algebra of SU(N) as N tends to infinity. We show that the area-preserving algebra of the sphere is equivalent to SU+(), whilst that of the torus is equivalent to SU(). 1989.
