Calculation of Pseudo Strain and Dissipated Pseudo Strain Energy in Unsaturated Soil Conference Paper uri icon

abstract

  • This paper deals with the application of the theory behind the pseudo strain concept to unsaturated soil behavior and testing methods leading to the calculation of pseudo strain and dissipated pseudo strain energy. Drained monotonic triaxial and undrained cyclic triaxial tests at constant suction were conducted on silty sand to investigate the effect of viscous resistance during testing. The monotonic triaxial test results analyzed both with and without the use of the pseudo strain concept were compared to the critical state based elasto-plastic model. The pseudo-strain test results conform more closely to the Alonso et al model. The cyclic test results were used to calculate the dissipated pseudo strain energy associated with accumulating plastic pseudo-strain. Based on calculated dissipated pseudo strain energy, a dissipated pseudo-strain deviatoric power failure theory for unsaturated soils under earthquake loading is proposed. The proposed theory shows the conditions under which the soil will fail either by cyclic mobility (soil acts as a solid) or by liquefaction (soil acts as a liquid). Copyright ASCE 2006.
