Modeling pipe network components using linear finite element formulation

A linear formulation for incorporating various network components into the analysis of pipe network will be presented. Network components will be modeled as separate elements and include pipes, elbows, knees, tees, valves, booster pumps, expansions, contractions, and discharge nozzles. The technique is suitable for branched and looped network. The advantages of the technique are ease of use and data preparation, ability of modeling and incorporating all essential network components into the analysis, cost effectiveness, ease of implementation on large and small computers. In addition, many of the existing finite element programs can be easily modified to solve for the pressure distribution in the network using the presented procedure.
