abstract

• The special of the Journal Of Structural Engineering focuses on real-world applications of structural identification (St-Id) and health monitoring methodologies. The special issue includes two forum papers and 12 technical papers on these topics. Aktan and Brownjohn discuss the state of the practice of civil engineering and the pressing needs for greater applications of SHMto properly selected constructed systems in the first forum paper. The second forum paper by Catbas and Kijewski-Correa overviews the latest ASCE-SEI report on structural identification of constructed facilities. The first technical paper provides a review of global positioning system (GPS) technology application in SHM. The second technical paper presents a study on the identification of progressive damage, using an equivalent linear finite-element model updating strategy in a large-scale masonry in-filled RC frame that has been tested on a shake table.
