HEDGEHOGS Chapter uri icon

abstract

  • This chapter familiarizes with basic knowledge of hedgehogs biology, care, medicine, and surgery. The enclosure for a hedgehog should be smooth walled and high enough to prevent escape of these agile climbers. The enclosure should be tall enough so that the outstretched hedgehog cannot get its feet over the top. Wire flooring should be avoided, as small hedgehog feet may become caught in the wire and result in toe or foot trauma, or fracture. Hedgehogs should be allowed out of their enclosure daily for exercise, but the area should be "hedgehog proof." Clear plastic exercise balls for the ferret or guinea pig allow exercise without free access. For hospitalization of the debilitated patient, a quiet, warm 80F to 84F, humid environment should be provided, with low lighting and minimal noise. The enclosure should be smooth sided and allow for heat and humidity control and have bars closely spaced enough to prevent escape or limb trauma. A smooth-sided incubator works well to achieve and maintain hospitalization parameters while also keeping the patient secure. 2009 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
