abstract
PowerSail (PS) is a concept being pursued by AFRL for supplying large amounts of power to a host satellite. The PS will fly in formation with the host, but be connected by an umbilical to supply the power. Assuming that the umbilical has no tension, the PS can be considered a free flying satellite. Due to the large area to mass ratio of PS, the dominant disturbing acceleration will be the differential solar radiation with the next largest being the differential atmospheric drag. In this paper the dynamics and control of the PS are investigated.
