abstract
Two methods for power system reliability assessment, combining Monte Carlo simulation and Self Organizing Map (SOM), are presented in this paper. The main feature of SOM is its ability to map input data from an n-dimensional space to a lower dimensional (usually two-dimensional) space while maintaining the original topological relationships. The proposed methodologies overcome the disadvantages of traditional Monte Carlo simulation for power system reliability evaluation and greatly reduce the computing burden of the loss of load probability calculation. A case study of the IEEE RTS system is presented demonstrating the efficiency of the proposed approaches.
