Diffusion of turbulent jet under waves Conference Paper uri icon

abstract

  • The present study is to investigate the influence of regular progressive waves on the diffusion of a neutrally buoyant turbulent round jet experimentally. The jet discharges horizontally at the mid-depth into the wave field in the direction against the wave propagation. The velocity field was measured using the particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique. The laser induced fluorescence (LIF) technique was used to examine the round jet cross sectional profile when the jet is under wave action. Three different wave periods with a range of wave amplitudes in each wave period were used to test the effect of waves on jet diffusion enhancement. The wave condition covers shallow and deep water while the wave slope ranges from linear to weakly nonlinear. The results showed that the jet was significantly affected by the waves. The wave dispersion enhanced the jet diffusion, especially for larger wave slope and shallower water depth. The results also showed that the wave-to-jet momentum ratio is the most important parameter in the determination of jet diffusion.
