abstract
Hill's or the Clohessy-Wiltshire equations are often used for the study of relative motion of formation flying satellites. These equations assume a motion about a spherical Earth, a circular reference orbit and the distance between the objects is small enough that the equations of motion can be linearized. These assumptions introduce modeling errors. In this paper the neglected nonlinear terms are considered in the context of all the modeling errors and a new approach is presented for including the nonlinear effects. 2002 by the author(s).
