Apply Process Integration to Environmental Impact Assessment
Additional Document Info
Effective and efficient process integration methods should be employed for environmental impact assessment (EIA). The key steps of process integration include task identification, targeting, generation of alternatives, and detailed analysis of selected alternatives. Process synthesis techniques may be used to systematically generate process alternatives to deliver minimum hydrogen production, wastewater generation, and usage of external mass-separating agents. The advantages of this approach include process performance can be benchmarked via rigorous targeting techniques, the engineer is able to quickly generate and screen project alternatives, and non-promising candidates are excluded from the analysis early. The approach reduces the process engineering efforts required for process retrofitting and for developing EIA studies, and provides an insight early in the design process and systematizes the design effort, while reconciling the various process objectives with the environmental objectives.
