abstract
This paper defines a new index, fractional duration before first failure and describes the methodology for its calculation. The relationship of this index to the mean time to first failure is also presented. The fractional duration before first failure is, therefore, not only a useful measure of system reliability but also provides an alternative approach to calculate mean time to first failure. The concepts and techniques are illustrated with suitable examples. 1984.
