2016 Sense Publishers. All rights reserved. Students will conduct a variety of chemical qualitative and quantitative analysis tests to gather data about a variety of known white powders and clear liquids. The analysis techniques that will be discussed may include, but are not limited to: state of matter, physical properties, density determination, boiling point, melting point, chemical indicators, solubility, paper chromatography, pH, spectroscopy results, and reactivity. Results of the qualitative and quantitative tests7 on known compounds will give students a chance to practice the analysis techniques and identify the results for the variety of potential unknowns. Using that information, students will develop a flowchart, concept map, table, and/or dichotomous key to help them identify one or more unknown compounds.
