ANALYTICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL PERFORMANCE OF SPHERE-PAC NUCLEAR-FUELS Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • In this paper, the principal developments in sphere-pac nuclear fuel are reviewed. Sphere-pac designs are being considered for both light water reactor (LWR) and liquid metal fast breeder reactor (LMFBR) applications. For LWR's, a three-size mixture of UO2 microspheres is used to achieve required smear densities. For LMFBR's, attention has been focused on a two-size (U, Pu)C design. This paper considers the various sphere-pac fuel manufacture and pin fabrication techniques. The main features of fuel element irradiation performance are treated including restructuring, fission gas release, swelling and fuel cladding interaction. Computational and analytical models for predicting and evaluating the behavior of sphere-pac pins are discussed. 1986.
