17 Compartmental models of ecological and environmental systems Book uri icon

abstract

  • This chapter is an expository progress report on the development of stochastic compartmental models as applied to ecological and environmental systems. The standard deterministic and stochastic multicompartment models are reviewed, and their utility for describing ecological and environmental systems is demonstrated with new examples. An approach using phase-type distributions is outlined for generalized compartmental models with arbitrary retention times. The approach is illustrated with shrimp migration data. New developments of compartmental models with births are described and applied to data on the spread of Africanized honey bees. 1994 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
