abstract
This study investigates an alternative seismic retrofit approach that can be employed in end-sway frames of deck-truss bridges. The proposed approach provides various modified bracing configurations that include supplemental damping systems. Experimental and analytical investigations on a 1:3 scale model of an existing steel end-sway frame tested on the shaking table at SUNY Buffalo demonstrated that proposed alternatives can efficiently improve the lateral strength and stiffness characteristics. Moreover, they modify the load path within the sway frame in favor of the existing steel bearings and reduce the overall demand. Copyright 2004 ASCE.
